Description
Coming from legendary Japanese manufacturer Sugino, the RD2 Messenger is their mid-level track crankset with a 46t 1/8" chainring.
The RD2 Messenger is a good mid-level track crankset that fits most frames, including conversions (with wider bottom bracket spindles).
The RD2 is actually the Sugino road double crankset converted to single speed/fixed gear use (thus the "RD", 130 BCD and wider chainline/Q-factor), however that doesn't mean it's not a great option.
Cold forged alloy arms and a stiff disc-like aluminum chain ring will work for most riders - especially those not needing or wanting to upgrade to the pricier track-specific 75.
Specs:
- Chainring BCD: 130
- Chainring Teeth: 46T
- Drivetrain Speeds: Single Speed 1/8"
- Spindle Interface Type: Square Taper JIS
- Bottom bracket length: 103mm
- Weight: ~565g
- Chainline : 45mm
Notes:
This crankset takes a JIS square taper 103mm bottom bracket, which is not included. However, you can add the Sugino BB3 (but don't use the incompatible Sugino 75 BB) or a Tange bottom bracket as options. For conversions, you can also get a longer BB spindle for clearance.
The black version is slightly more expensive given the more expensive anodizing process versus tke polished silver model.
The RD2 and the RD2 Messenger differ by their chain ring. The Messenger has a 165mm crank arms and has a stiffer 1/8" 46T disc-type chainring (which also makes it more expensive) while the RD2 has a 165mm or 170m crankarm and the 3/32" 48T classic style chainring.
