2019 Wabi Special

BUILT FOR THE PURIST

For many cyclists, the ultimate bicycle starts with a high quality steel frame, using low temperature brazing and lugs to join the tubes. Lugged steel bike frames offer a road feel unlike any other design, but not all lugged steel frames are created equal.

The Wabi Special uses a fully hand-brazed frame, built by specially trained frame builders in Taiwan. The difference in the Wabi Special is that these builders are trained by one of the top hand-built frame builders from Japan.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

The retro vibe of the fully lugged, Reynolds 725 frame is like nothing else you'll find - especially at this price. The workmanship (clean joints, mitering of the tubes, drop outs seamlessly integrated into the stays) is outstanding, and the resulting ride is buttery-smooth, with amazing stability.

      Steel

We use Reynolds 725 and Columbus Spirit. These higher quality grades of steel allows us to use less of it, so you get a lighter, more responsive frame.

      E.D Coating

Our steel frames are E.D. coated to act as a rust preventative and a primer. This high-performance rust inhibitor is applied inside the frame and out.

      design

Wabi frames are road-designed with upright angles, and short wheelbases, which creates comfort, efficiency, and predictable handling. Our road frame design gives you an agile and fast ride.

      Details

We love the detail of our frames. You'll find cast-brazed dropouts, machined head tubes, brazed seatpost collars, bottle cage eyelets, and brazed forks.

I'm really impressed with the ride quality of my wabi. The bike was made with quality parts that translates into a smooth comfortable and adjustable ride. I feel like I got great value in my bike as well. I'm already anticipating purchasing another for my girlfriend.

      Smoothest bike you'll ever ride!

"I bought my Special from Richard in March of 2016 and it quickly became my daily road bike. My beautiful Pinarello sits dejectedly in my garage pleading for me to ride her. The Special has a crisp yet smooth ride. It's not twitchy but it responds to every nuance. It climbs well, it cruises well, it corners well and most of all, it soaks up road vibration better than any bike I've ever owned. I've owned a lot of bikes since my first purchase in 1975 when I worked in a bike shop in Cleveland Ohio. Through all of the subsequent years I've owned some really fine bikes. This Wabi Special eclipses all of them. The frame quality is excellent and the components although not "name brand" perform admirably well. Build quality was excellent as well and the wheels...let me say something I have never said about any of my previous bikes or other bikes I've sold when I worked in shops: the build quality of the wheels cannot be matched anywhere else. Perfectly and evenly tensioned. Perfectly trued. Remain in true through rough road. I've owned this bike for well over a year now and it only needs very minor truing every month or so. I promise you that this bike will be the smoothest riding bike you'll ever own. I loved my Special so much that I bought a Classic from Matt last fall. I call her "Midnight". She's stealthy, light, fast and easy on the eyes. Oh, and she's a smooth operator also!"

      Wabi Special

"Matt was incredibly helpful and patient while helping me pick out this bike. I haven't owned a bike for 20 years so I had to do a lot of research before finally picking the Wabi. it was down to this bike and the Bianchi Pista (that I would customize). I'm really glad I chose the Wabi Special as the lugged Reynolds steel is fantastic. I was going to get the lighter sub wheels but as i live in NYC I was concerned about durability. I loved the way they looked (all silver) but I'm 180lbs and the streets are rough here. Matt was really good about listening to my concerns and advising me without telling me which wheel set to choose. Going with the stock wheels was a great choice as the streets are even rougher then I thought and these wheels are holding up well. I also can't believe how light they are. I had a few minor issues as a nut was missing for my front wheel when it arrived but Matt sent it right away and I got one from my local hardware store so I could ride the few days it took to arrive. After a bit of riding the wheels were not perfectly trued but I had already hit some rough spots by then. i had them trued three weeks in and it was very minor. I am not an expert on bikes but riding this bike just feels good. Smooth, very fast, easy up the hills, great over rough roads, light and just plain fun. I've used this as my main transportation everyday since I've gotten it. Everything is stock except for a Brooks saddle and handlebar tape that Matt got and installed for me. I wasn't sure about gear ratio and got the 46x18 which is awesome but too easy up the few hills in NYC. I just replaced the chain ring to a 48 and that suits me better. It's really fun to be able to swap out parts as i go although I doubt I'll change anything else. It's awesome!"

      Nice product!

"Great product. The bike is well made, beautiful, and fun to ride. It was fantastic to be able to customize it with relative ease. My only (minor) complaint is that the ""Burnt Red"" color is definitely red-orange. Just a heads up for prospective buyers. "
